My name is Jon Merin. I am twenty-three years old and now the oldest child in my family. My trade or you could call job, is to either repair or to make things like tinware. I work with light metals and tin. I had four brothers and five sisters. One of my brothers died by working in the snow and he got to cold. When we found him, he was as cold as ice. His name was David. When he was alive, I was the second oldest. My parents are at a very old age. My parents sacrificed a lot to get us to New York. I thank them greatly. My parents and I came to the colonies to get away from all the taxes. They were charging to much with the taxes. My parents also agreed with me. That's how my my parents became poor quickly.

By trade I am called tinsmith. Unlike blacksmiths do, I work with cold metal. I might have to heat the metal up every once in awhile. I get to fabricate metals such as tin, forks and spoons and also candle holders. I get to train new tinsmiths, most think it is hard to be one at first. New, learning tinsmiths are called, apprentices. I have had a few of some fellow apprentices. Most of my apprentices became peddlers or tinkers. I am so proud of them. A tinsmith’s purpose is to repair trinkets like forks and spoons made out of tin. Most of the tools I use are similar to coppersmith tools. I use an anvil made of steel to hammer the tin in the shape that I want it to be. What I also need to do my work is soldering iron and a fire pot. I also use wooden mallets.

Hello, Jon. I'm glad you could join us. Your family came to the colonies for the same reasons that so many other families moved. I only hope that King George does not tax us too heavily.

Hello my name is Susana Walls and I am 14 years old. My family and I just moved to New York from France. When we lived in new york it was so big I got lost 2 times when I was 5. I have a little baby brother that is 3 months old and my mom and dad don’t want my brother to get lost like I did. That is why we moved to somewhere smaller. I am not just an older sibling I am aso a baker too. I have my own bakery. Now I am going to tell you how I became a baker.

It all started when my dad was 20 years old my dad started to bake. He baked for his family. The next year on his twenty first birthday he got a bakery. Now every day for dinner my family and I go to the bakery to eat dinner. My dad would make the best garlic bread ever. When I turned 10 my dad wanted me to help him out in the bakery. He was lonely in the bakery. and needed help because there is only one of him an a 100 people who wants pastries. The next day he started teaching me how to bake. I loved baking so much also started to also baked for the family with my dad.4 years later my dad gave the bakery to me and and he started working as a farmer because I just found out that my dad loves animals and he still gets to make food and I think that is a good job for him. Now that I have my own bakery I should get back to working.

Hi! My name is Priscilla Atwood. I’m nineteen and the oldest member of my family that is living in the colonies. I am the main butter churner for the family. We live on a farm in Georgia. I have two older brothers who still are in England. Since my older brothers, Charles and Alex, are in England and my mother has died, I’m left to do all the housework mom would usually do. I have four younger sisters and three younger brothers to take care of, plus my aunt Ashley sent her three kids over. I always have to keep the house very clean or my family will get sick. We came over from England because my parents did not want to pay all of the taxes that England was telling them to pay. Making butter is not easy. To make butter, you need a butter churn, and
some thick cream. To make butter you churn the thick cream until the butter and the buttermilk separate. After that you take it out of the churn and rinse it with ice cold water. Make sure to squeeze it out at least three times. After add what ever salt and/or flavorings you may like.

Hello,my name is Grace Dickson. I am 12 years old, and have two brothers and two sisters. I am the middle child in my family. My family is from England and we came to the colony of Rhode Island. It is very cold during the winter. My family decided to leave England because there was no more land to own and the taxes were very high. My parents decided to make a new life in the new world.
My sisters and I work as candlemakers. It is fun and hard at the same time. Candles are needed for light in the dark. To make candles you need animal fat and beeswax. We can make about 210 candles in one day! My brothers sell the candles in our shop.

Hi my name is Maive Merann. I am 17 years old. I am a leather worker. I live with my parents and three siblings, two brothers and one sister, I am the oldest child. My family and I came from England. We moved to Virginia to have better jobs and to own land.

Me and my family are all leather workers, leather is very important for us. Leather is used for shoes, clothing, saddles for horses, furniture and much more. Leather is made from the skins of many different kinds of animals. It is not easy to make leather. There is a whole process of removing hair and fur, soaking, pounding, stretching and scraping, and soaked again, and then hung to dry. It could take months. The tools we use are fleshing knifes, vat hook, mace, sleekers and buffers.

Hello, my name is Edwin Gray. I am 22 years old. My trade is a shoemaker. I make shoes and fix shoes. I had 4 brothers and 2 sisters. On the boat to from England, two of my brothers, Paul and Logan died of rat disease. When they came to the harbor, me and my father were already at New York waiting for them. When sailors brought out their bodies, they were as limp as ropes. We waited for my other brother George and my two sisters, Elizabeth and America have the funeral for my two brothers. It was a sad day for all of my family.
We moved out of England to escape debt. We couldn’t let that get in the way of work, My father taught me how to fix shoes before he taught me how to make shoes. I got pretty good at fixing shoes, but making shoes was very difficult. I thought I was going to give up shoemaking but instead I persisted. Over time, it became easier. Now I live in New York and I have a pretty good shoe business.
As a shoemaker, I make shoes. I have ready made shoes however, I can make the perfect pair for you at your request. I use a hammer, an awl, a mold, and a pair of fabric scissors. I use leather and or fabric. I use cork for the soles. The tread I use is strands of flax coated with pine tar (pitch). I work long days. It takes me eight to ten hours to make one pair of shoes.

My name is Thomas Scot. I am 52 years old. I used to live in Scotland, but now, when I was 12 years old, we moved to the colonies for freedom of religion. Since I was 24 years old, I have been a teacher. I have 5 brothers and 9 sisters.
I teach in a one-room-school-house made of logs. Men usually taught in schools and women usually taught in their kitchen. Our classroom has no blackboard or maps. All we have is a globe that I got from one of the students going off to college. Paper is scarce and we have had to use foolscap paper. We used lead plummets . We had an 8 by thirteen foolscap paper. We drew lines with lead plummets on the paper. In case somebody doesn't behave, I keep a paddle behind my desk. I don't usually use it, I just threaten and they don't act up. School starts at 7:00 or 8:00 am and resumes until 11:00. They return to school at 1:00 and go until 4:00 or 5:00.

My name is Solomon Bell, I am 36 years old. I am a Blacksmith. I have 4 older sisters, I am the youngest child in my family. My parents moved to the colonies from England. My sisters were born in England, but I was born in the New World. My parents moved for economic gain, since there was more farming happening in the colonies, my father who is a Blacksmith felt he could make more money for his family. The men in my family have been blacksmiths for generations, and I am continuing that tradition.

As a blacksmith, I work with iron and steel. I heat the metal in a hot fire called a forge, then hammer the metal into various tools and household items. I help farmers and their families by making shoes for the horses, nails to build things, pots to cook in and more. I work with my father in his blacksmith shop, he is older now and I have taken on the more difficult and laborious tasks. Our shop includes a forge for the fire, an anvil, hammers, tongs, vises and files.

Is a farm hard to work on? How many acres of land do you have? Also, can I have some meat?
